Mary Lindsey Creditt

Biography

Mary Lindsey Creditt (1835–1912) was a Baltimore businesswoman, property owner, and church worker born in Essex County, Virginia. In 1860, she lived in Baltimore with her husband and children as free people of color. Creditt was among the earliest members of First African Baptist Church, from which Union Baptist Church later developed. She also taught Sunday school at Trinity Baptist Church for twenty years. Widowed and the mother of twelve children, Creditt assumed control of her husband's teamster business and operated a grocery store.

By 1900, she had paid off the mortgage on her home and owned more property than any other African-American woman in Baltimore, according to the supplied historical account. Following her death in 1912, funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Harvey Johnson and the Rev. W. M. Alexander.
